Decided to make a quick trip South before the cold northern blast comes in on Wednesday evening, making it impossible to play anywhere within 350 miles of Michigan. This early Pete Dye course designed in 1963 is one of his more tame designs as there are many grass bunkers throughout the course, that replaced his typical stroke costing, sand traps. This is a very straight forward flat layout that has slight kicks to most of the hole designs. The fairways were cut mid-season short and with the slightly frozen ground, I was getting an extra 50-80 yds on my 200-220yd drives. This was very well received until I hit my first PW into the green and watched it bounce over the flag stick. Every silver lining has a catch, but playing golf in January has it's learning curve, Land Short of Greens. Having four (4) slections from Black 6,443yds / 70.2 / 116 down to Red 4,812yds / 69.0 / 114 you can pick your poison on this Par 35/35 layout. I chose the Whites 2,976/3,058 / 68.4 / 110 because the Blacks were under repair and this worked to my advantage for scoring. The first three (3) holes are between 330-353yd straightaway Par 4's (Whites) and then #4 is a 183-115yd par 3 with no trouble but grass bunkers. Then #6 a 460-300yd Par 4 Hcp 1 around a pond that kicks anything short left of the green into the pond raises it's head. The #9 is a friendly 492-360yd Par 5 that makes you feel good making the turn. The Back 9 is a more demanding layout as most of the Par 4's are 400yds plus with narrower fairways with a little creek running through four (4) holes. The #12 is a 435yd Par 4 Hcp 4 dogleg left with a RH creek all the way to the green. It's a narrow fairway and a 185-200yd tee to the corner is what you need to see the green. The #15 is a 511yd Par 5 that is just straightaway shot on a narrow cut fairway to a raised, grass bunkered green. Finishing up on #18 is a 445yd Par 4 with a lefthand kick in the fairway 250yds out to a uphill raised green. Enjoyed playing here today and shooting 39/38 w/32 putts with that extra driving distance that brought back memories of my glory days in my 40 and 50's.
